Farm & agricultural solar panels in Lincolnshire
Barns, grain stores and poultry houses around Spalding and Holbeach often have the roof area and daytime electrical load that make farm solar work. PPM Electrical Ltd is an MCS-accredited installer based in Spalding. We design arrays around irrigation, drying, packing and cold rooms — not a generic house system scaled up.
Why farm solar suits Lincolnshire
South Holland holdings use power when the sun is up: fans, pumps, grading lines, cold rooms. That self-consumption is what pays the system back. Exporting everything at SEG rates is a weaker case than using it on the dryer or the packhouse.
We have installed panels on corrugated farm roofs, timber outbuildings and larger agricultural buildings. Photos on our solar PV page show typical Lincolnshire barns and rural roofs — that is the work we actually do, not stock images from another county.
Barns, grain stores and poultry units
Steel portal barns and grain stores usually take a rail system if the sheets and purlins are sound. Poultry and livestock buildings need careful cable routes and isolation so the array does not get in the way of wash-down or bird-turnaround.
Fibre-cement and older asbestos-cement roofs need a honest survey. If the roof cannot take the load, we talk about over-cladding or a ground-mounted array on spare land rather than risking the building.
Three-phase, grid capacity and G99
Many farms already have three-phase. That helps, but the network still has to accept the export. We check the incoming supply and submit G99 (or G98) as required. Grid-capacity limits are real in rural Lincolnshire; we would rather tell you before you spend than after the DNO says no to the size you wanted.
Batteries and irrigation loads
Irrigation pumps and cold stores can be paired with batteries so cheap overnight power and midday solar cover the peaks. See our battery storage page and the article on charging solar batteries at night.
What you get
Site survey, design, MCS-compliant install, electrical certification, generation paperwork for SEG, and a local number for aftercare. We are NAPIT certified for electrical inspection and testing and MCS accredited for the renewables — one contractor, one programme.
Frequently asked questions
- How big a farm system can you install?
- From small barn arrays up to larger commercial kWp sizes limited by roof, structure and DNO approval. We size from your bills and load, not a catalogue maximum.
- Will solar work on a north-facing barn?
- East-west and south-facing roofs are better. We model the roof in the survey. A poor orientation is sometimes still worth doing if the load is high; sometimes it is not.
